Review of Mouthwashes
|
There is often plaque left when most people finish brushing or using interdental cleaners. Anti-microbials and antiseptics in mouthwashes have been used to help remove the remainder. Antiseptics include chlorhexidine (savacol) cetylpyridinium (oral B tooth and gum care) triclosan (plax) hydrogen peroxide (peroxyl and amosan) chlorine dioxide (closys) Chlorhexidine has been shown to be the most effective but cannot be used as a long term solution. Very effective for acute episodes of gum problems, trauma, and after surgery. Not much research has been done on the best way to deliver mouthwash to the affected areas. Introducing the mouthwash to the interdental areas on a interproximal brush is logically the most effective way.
