How important is your toothbrushing?
|
It is not well understood why toothbrushing is effective in preventing gum problems. If you can imagine that bacteria(plaque) colonise the surface of your teeth and under gums and create a special environment for themselves. This environment is difficult for our bodies protective substances and any chemicals we add to our mouth like mouthwash and toothpaste to penetrate. BUT the mechanical action of a correctly used toothbrush disturbs this environment and stops the plaque from having its bad effect on our gums and tooth surface. So remember that it is more important that the mechanical action of the bristles of the brush connects with the areas that the plaque is accumulating than any chemicals that you use to prevent gum disease or tooth decay. The plaque builds up in the following places at agreater rate than any other. 1. Along the gum line 2. In between teeth and 3. In deep grooves and fissures in the teeth.
