Tooth Bleaching What Works and What Doesn't?

  • The active form of any whitening (bleaching) agent is hydrogen peroxide. For detail on the bleaching process and the reasons for discoloured teeth please click on Discoloured teeth and whitening

  • Some teeth are more porous and take up the bleach very quickly and for these people a lot of bleaching solutions will work for them.

  • For most people the hydrogen peroxide needs to be in contact with your teeth for a substantial amount of time to have a significant effect in whitening your teeth.

  • In-the-surgery bleaching can work but it is mostly followed up with home bleaching with dentist formed trays. Because it takes up alot of in office time this makes it more expensive.

  • Whitening toothpastes rarely work because the active ingredient is not in contact with the teeth for long enough and we do not recommend the long term use of these products.

  • Please review our sheet on home bleaching techniques to make sure you are getting the most out of your bleaching.

  • Please speak to your dentist or hygienist if you have any questions. We are happy to answer any questions on-line or contact Dr Morris or Dr Downing at our surgery in Neutral Bay Phone 9908 3466 or email advice@dentalcareproducts.com.au
